After an unusually busy weekend of socialising across the Irish counties of Dublin and Wicklow, including a Nicky Mulvey gig at Dublin's iconic venue Vicar Street and a Diarmuid Gavin gig at airy new Wicklow spot Amo & Pax, and many lovely meals and drinks at some new spots in between, it's back to business at the home studio this morning, back in the dark black box attempting to ignore the brilliant sunshine flooding my garden...
Oh well, the holidays will return - in the meantime, the work must be done!

FNI Wrapchat is back in 2024 after a well-needed break with this fresh episode hosted by me, where I get another opportunity to interview the remarkable author, activist and film professional Winnie M Li. This is my second of three interviews with Winnie so far, the first one back in 2023 for the Murder One Book Festival on a blisteringly sunny Sunday in a mercifully air-conditioned auditorium in the DLR Lexicon, and the third coming later this year on a separate podcast - and I hope there will be many more; I could talk to Winnie for days. We discuss the traumatic attack in a Belfast park that forced Winnie to pivot from her film career into writing, and the 360 journey it has taken her on as she now adapts her novel based on that harrowing experience, Dark Chapter, into a screenplay, a process she calls 'brutal'. Listen now on Spotify! A recent visit to Mutiny to record all sorts for the lovely GroupM/Mazda Motor Europe/Mindshare Ireland crew, featuring Ger Killoran, Emma Morris & Hugh Kirwan in the driving seat, with Mark Richards steering the wheel (I simply had to).
As always with the wonderful tea service, too. Thanks Tracey M. PS the Mutiny reception table is always good for talent spotting.
When I was asked to contribute to this Voice Crafters article 'British Accents - A Comprehensive Guide,' I was, as many other Irish people would understand, a little conflicted. While I didn't quite start my responding email with '800 years...', I did try to highlight The Republic as a separate nation, albeit one very much shaped, linguistically and otherwise, by its colonial past. Not sure how well that came across in the finished article, but this is certainly a comprehensive and interesting guide to British accents - as well as some Irish ones for good measure. I mean, it wouldn't really be a British accent guide if they didn't claim a few Irish along the way, so I suppose it all checks out. Here's a quote from me trying really hard not to sound like a Fenian warrior, below. The majority of Southern Irish people are fiercely protective of our cultural and linguistic heritage, and quite adamant in separating that from our previous history as a colony of the United Kingdom. I recently caught up with my long-standing clients Danone Cow & Gate who I've been voicing ads for since 2015, for an all new campaign and sound with ZOO, 'Here Comes Happy.'
This surprisinglyy energetic and upbeat campaign (in comparison to this super sweet one that I voiced for the last 8 years) was recorded in Mutiny Recording Studios (in one of my rare city studio outings in these days of virtual link ups via home studio) by Mark Richards, and steered by Ian Hollinshead of Zoo & Chelsea Sandford of Danone. Always lovely trying new things with old friends. NEW WORK for SIPTU and Financial Services Union.
Over the last number of years the shift in many big business models has been away from the 'job for life' with benefits, pensions, and sick pay, and increasingly towards a model that shifts market risk onto workers and their families to maximise profit for the companies - a trend I've been exploring in one of my own personal projects (more on that soon!) and one I am all too familiar with as a 'freelance creative' aka gig worker. So, I found it serendipitous when I was asked to voice this campaign for #RESPECTATWORK. More information can be found at respectatwork.ie. Volcanic Talent Hello there, Lately I've been back in the HOT seat for HOT 102.7FM, South Africa's fastest growing radio station. Ever since I jumped on board with this exciting new Joburg radio station last year, they have gone from strength to strength, being nominated for and winning awards across the globe, including one for Best Imaging...just saying. It's kind of a coincidence. I've been having a blast topping up their freshest imaging from my home studio in Ireland's garden county and hearing it played back to me by friends in SA or online - I suppose that is the beauty of living and working via tech these days. You can be anywhere. It's nice to know that even while the rain pounds the windows outside my studio today in Ireland, at least my vocal chords are soaking up some delicious South African sun. Lekker! To hear some of the best old school and R&B sounds, and our award-winning imaging, click here.
A new Film Network Ireland Wrapchat episode of mine is coming out shortly in which I interview an inspiring woman with a career that has seen many twists and turns along the way, and that she has faced with resiliency and creative will.
But before that one's released, here's a throwback to an interview I did with another inspiring woman, Irish actress Eva Birthistle. LISTEN HERE! |
